It’s National Blood Donor Week. One blood donation can save up to three lives. This year Lifeblood is telling that story through kids: they had children at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital draw what they love about life, and turned those drawings into this year’s donor bandages. A life in colour, kept going by someone they’ll never meet. Out here, giving takes a bit of effort. For most of us it’s a drive to Bunbury or Albany. But it’s about an hour of your day for someone else’s whole life, and it’s the same spirit as the first responders we thanked this week: a quiet way of showing up for a stranger. Good news for Boyup Brook: the Telstra mobile tower is being upgraded. Work started on Monday and will run for around seven days. While it’s underway, Telstra mobile services in the area will be intermittently offline, for up to 10 hours at a stretch, as the upgrade is completed. A few things worth knowing: NBN, satellite internet, landlines and other mobile providers won’t be affected. If you need to call Triple Zero from a Telstra mobile while the site is offline, your call will automatically connect through another available network. Telstra customers in the area should get an SMS before work begins, and you can track the outage at telstra.com/mobile-outages. A short-term disruption for a better long-term connection. Better coverage is something Boyup Brook has been asking for, and this is a step toward it.

When something goes wrong out here, the person who turns up is almost always a volunteer. Today is Thank a First Responder Day. It honours the people who answer the call, police, fire and rescue, ambulance, SES, marine rescue and the Triple Zero operators, and the families who hold things together at home while they do. More than 95 per cent of WA’s emergency services personnel are volunteers, on DFES’s own figures. Out here, that’s just your neighbours. To every one of them, paid and volunteer: thank you. I wasn’t complaining — I was advocating for women and children in crisis. During Estimates, I asked a simple question: what metrics and data does the Government actually need to see before it commits to a women’s shelter in Warren–Blackwood? That’s not “complaining”. That’s doing my job. I resent the suggestion that raising the concerns of vulnerable women and children is somehow a complaint. I’m trying to work with the Government to understand what evidence they require so we can finally secure the services our community desperately needs. Right now, women fleeing family and domestic violence are still being forced to travel 2 to 2.5 hours to access emergency accommodation and support. That is not good enough. The Minister acknowledged the advocacy and pressure coming from our region — and I’ll continue pushing because regional women deserve the same access to safety and support as anyone living in the city. This is about practical action, not politics.
